EOGM. Update of TAS Constitution.

The Architecture Society 31st Committee has come to a decision to reschedule the EOGM to the beginning of the next academic year. By doing this we hope to achieve the following:

1. Wider awareness of the changes and TAS’s role.
2. Inclusion of juniors, namely first and second year students.
3. Collaboration with incoming committee so as to hand over with purpose. (handing over ceremony)
4. Utilise the EOGM to forecast ahead for the next committee’s endeavours and activities.

As of current a school-wide petition will be conducted across the student body next week which, moots a change to Article IX: General Meetings in The Architecture Society Constitution, read as following in the article below.

Talk Synopsis
Arising out of the recent declaration of the Singapore Conference Hall & Trade Union House as a National Monument, the Singapore Heritage Society has invited (Datuk Seri) Lim Chong Keat to present a talk about the concepts and the total design and building process and that led to the realisation of the building – and also the historical circumstances for architecture at that time. The speaker was a principal of the firm Malayan Architects Co-Partneship which won the architectural competition, and was the key designer and architect-in-charge of the project. He will discuss aspects of the total design including the site planning, the structure, climate considerations and detailing, and will also mention his special interest in the acoustics of the hall, and its use not only for conferences but also for concert performances.

Speaker Profile
Lim was trained at the University of Manchester and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and was the President of the Singapore Institute of Architects, SIA (1966 – 1969), and a Gold Medallist of the Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia, PAM (Malaysian Institute of Architects). His other projects in Singapore include the (former) UOB HQ, the DBS Building and the Jurong Town Hall.

Proudly brought to you by the Singapore Heritage Society.

Facilitators Wanted – Cube 2011

Organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority(URA), the third Challenge for the Urban & Built Environment (CUBE) student workshop will be held for 4.5 days from 30 May till 3 June this year. CUBE is our yearly educational outreach to tertiary level students. We hope to once again use it as a platform to build up a new generation of youths who are driven in making their community a better place to live, work, study and play in.

Our website (http://www.ura.gov.sg/aude/cube_challenge.htm) should give you a clearer idea of how CUBE 2010 was conducted.

Our study area this year is the Fort Canning foothills. The students will be presenting their proposals on improving the area through urban planning, design and programming. As we plan to have 16 teams participating, so we’ll need about 16 facilitators. We will also need them to come down for a briefing session first before the workshop, which will be held at the URA Centre.

This is a good chance for facilitators to expand their portfolio and contribute to the wider architectural community. We hope to interest year 4s or year 5s. There will also be a token renumeration for the facilitators, but details will be worked out at a later stage.
